As Uzbekistan’s heartland of handicrafts, you’ll have no shortage of artistic souvenirs to choose from in Fergana Valley. Our suggestion is to buy directly from the artisan workshops or at handicraft shops that feature local artists. Our CTN Artisan Members are a good place to start to find local artisans and their studio workshops, as well as stores that support local artisans. The Craft House in Fergana City not only displays handicrafts from local artisans, but you also see them at work or even book a master class to learn how to do it yourself. Silk Granat in Namangan City offers something similar.
A few recommended Fergana Valley souvenirs include:
- Handmade silk products from Margilan: Scarves, fabrics, household items and clothing in traditional ikat patterns are great for fashion-savvy shoppers.
- Rishtan handmade ceramics: These renowned ceramics style feature distinctive blue-green glazes and intricate hand-drawn designs on plates, bowls, and decorative pieces.
- Gurumsaroy handmade ceramics: Another of the famous schools of ceramics in Fergana Valley in Namangan Region that features natural dyes and design inspirations from nature.
- Handmade knives, including with Damasc Steel: Fergana Valley’s long knifemaking tradition continues with beautifully crafted knives made by masters in Chust (Namangan Region) and Shakhrikhan (Andijan Region). Be sure to get a certificate from the knifemaker to avoid any problems at customs when you leave the country.
- Suzani embroideries: Traditional suzani with its bright colors and intricate designs create stunning wall hangings, coats or clothing that will turn heads or beautiful pillows or other household items.
- Wooden carved items, leather goods (check out Elnur Leather in Fergana City for interesting handmade designs that combine leather with local suzani or ikat), dolls and miniature paintings are also good souvenir items.
